"Colors of Neglect and Decay" Steve Smith
Artist's Statement

I have been helping to take care of my father and noticing how many things he has accumulated over the years.  A lot of what he has collected has been neglected and started to decay over time.  Initially, I considered most of what he has just to be junk which should have been thrown away long ago.  But, when I started taking a closer look at some of the things he had laying around, I saw a potential for  visual interest in some of those items.  Initially, it was the textures and lighting which I found interesting.  But, after I started to photograph some of those objects, I started to notice glints of color showing through some of the dust.  Some of the objects even still had color clinging to them in the form of rust, mold, old paint, or even a poorly redone fresh paint job.  I emphasized the colors and textures in Photoshop and ended up with some interesting images.

Inspired by a visit to The Columbian Restaurant, Ybor City. Other than just the dress I wanted to incorporate different aspects of the culture and atmosphere that surrounds these dancers. The colorful bouquets of flowers that decorated the tables in the audience. The vines strung upon the wall that provided the backdrop of their performance. The dress itself would bill filled with multiple patterns to give the appearance that it was moving indifferent directions. The last object that I added was the purple and pink boa that the dancers would use to tease the audience.

Artist's Statement

This project represents an image in my dream exactly as I saw it. It appeared to me as a black and white image of a skyline silhouette of a city skyline floating in a cloudy sky with brightly colored numbers of different sizes floating down below it.  I decided not to alter the image or add to it in any way.  I just rendered it in Photoshop to look like what I remembered and noted in my journal.

It was interesting to see what meanings are associated with the individual components of my dream.  Seeing buildings represent the self and the body, while numbers are symbolic of formulas, equations, and linear thought. Overcast clouds can suggest sadness or a tendency towards depression. And yet the fact that all these images are floating can mean that one has gained a new or different perspective on things.  Even colors and numbers each have meaning (see attached links).
